Transit visas for Colombia: What you need to know about stopovers

When travelling internationally, the itinerary often includes stopovers in different countries. In such cases, it is essential to know the formalities and requirements for transit visas to avoid unpleasant surprises once you arrive at the airport.

What is a transit visa?

A transit visa is an official document issued by the competent authorities of a country allowing a foreign traveller to pass through its territory without staying there. It is generally required when a person has an extended stopover and needs to leave the international area of the airport.

Who needs a transit visa for Colombia?

As a general rule, passengers making a stopover in Colombia do not need a transit visa if they remain in the international zone of the airport and their stay does not exceed 24 hours.

However, certain nationalities are required to obtain a transit visa, even if they do not leave the international zone of the airport. These include nationals of Palestine and Cuba.

Travellers requiring a transit visa are those taking a flight with a stopover in Colombia and who have their final destination in another country. Colombian citizens, permanent residents in Colombia and holders of a valid visa for Colombia do not need to apply for a transit visa.

How do I obtain a transit visa for Colombia?

Consulates and embassies

For the nationalities requiring a transit visaIf you do not have a passport, you can obtain one from the Colombian consulate or embassy in your country of residence. In this case, you will need to provide additional documents, including proof of accommodation for the duration of the stopover (if applicable), a detailed itinerary and financial proof of your ability to support yourself during your stay in transit.

Other online procedures: Check-Mig

To simplify entry into the country, the Colombian authorities are providing travellers with an online platform called Check-mig. On this page, you can request your compulsory document for everyone entering or leaving the country.

To do this, go to our dedicated Check-MIG form, enter your personal details and those relating to your trip (dates, country of departure and destination, length of stay, etc.). Then send us the requested documents.

If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with the document, which you will need to print out and present to customs officials at the airport. We recommend that you make this request at least 5 days before your departure via our services.
