What is the Check-mig for Colombia?

Le Check-migalso known as 'Control Migratorio' or 'Migracion Colombia', is a system set up by the Colombian government to facilitate and control the management of travellers entering and leaving the country. The system requires travellers, whether tourists, temporary residents or permanent residents, to provide certain information before arriving in or leaving Colombia.

Why has Colombia introduced Check-mig?

The system was created to improve border security and combat illegal immigration, as well as to enable the government to better understand and control the flow of travellers passing through its territory. It is also a way for the country to comply with international standards in terms of travel security and facilitation, by putting in place an effective system for managing passengers' personal data.

How does Check-mig work?

Check-mig involves filling in an online form on the official website or directly on our help site. The information requested mainly concerns the traveller's civil status and contact details, as well as flight details and date of entry into or departure from the country. Once the form has been completed, the traveller must then validate it and print out a copy to present to the control authorities when crossing the border. The Check-mig must be carried out for each journey, even if there are several entries or exits from Colombian territory in a short space of time. This procedure applies both to foreign travellers and to Colombian nationals living abroad and returning to their country of origin.

Who is Check-mig designed for?

All international travellers are subject to this procedure, whether they are tourists, students, workers, members of a diplomatic mission, etc. It is important to note that Colombians living abroad are also subject to the Check-mig when they return to Colombia.

When should I complete the Check-mig?

The Colombian government recommends that you complete the Check-mig form between 24 hours and one hour before your scheduled flight time. If you wish to use our services, we ask you to complete it at least 5 days before your flight so that we can process your request. This gives us extra time in the event of a problem. Nevertheless, validation of the Check-Mig remains valid for 24 hours after the date of entry into or departure from Colombia, if the traveller encounters a delay or unforeseen change to their flight schedule.

What are the consequences of forgetting the Check-mig?

If travellers fail to present a printed copy of their validated Check-Mig when crossing the border, they may be penalised, banned from entering Colombia or simply denied boarding. The Colombian authorities are very strict on this point, and cases of forgetfulness can result in major delays for the passenger concerned. It is therefore advisable to prepare your documentation carefully before departure, and to check that all the necessary documents are in an easily accessible place.
